APS parent Mrs. S would like to know why the Child Nutrition Services Department decided to implement Provision 2, Universal Feeding at all of the elementary schools?

First, Universal Feeding ensures that every one of our elementary students will enjoy a breakfast, and a lunch, every school day at no charge to them. It's is unfortunate, but true, that a number of our students, for a variety of reasons, do not now enjoy the nutrition they critically need from these two meals every day of the school year. Many studies show a clear link between proper nutrition and learning. Students who eat a good breakfast and lunch learn better than those who don't. Therefore, the Universal Feeding Program will prepare our students for learning, and help to combat childhood hunger in our community.

Second, Universal Feeding will remove any stigma associated with more traditional 'free' meal programs. Since everyone will eat at no-charge, there is no way for anyone to tell what a person's socio-economic status is by the price they pay for lunch.

Third, Universal Feeding Program will, according to estimates, increase student participation in the school meal programs, speed up the lunch lines, eliminate administrative costs, and the program can be financially self-supporting.

Finally, the success of the Universal Feeding Program and receipt of federal funds is dependent on completed meal applications. Therefore, we encourage the parents and guardians of every child in our school community to fill out and return the applications for Provision 2, Universal Feeding.
